EFCC Chief Proposes Rehabilitation Over Harsh Punishment for Youth Cybercriminals
Eko Hot Blog reports that during an interrogation at his Lagos office, a 17-year-old hacker left the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, stunned.
The young prodigy effortlessly hacked into Olukoyede’s personal computer and bank account.

Recounting the incident, Olukoyede said, “He asked for my number, I gave him my number and through my number, he got my BVN.” The boy then revealed the chairman’s account number, without being provided any information.
Moreover, the hacker boldly claimed he could transfer up to 10 million naira from any account. “He opened my laptop, I didn’t give him the key to my laptop and he had access,” Olukoyede added.
However, the chairman sees both crime and opportunity in such skills. He believes harsh punishments could destroy these youths’ futures.
“What joy will I derive from sending a 17-year-old boy to jail? You have destroyed his future,” Olukoyede stated. Instead, he advocates for light sentences and reorientation programs.

The teenager, who supports his farmer parents and siblings, caught Olukoyede’s attention. “I saw a Bill Gates in that guy,” he remarked, offering to sponsor the boy’s education if he abandons cybercrime.
This approach aligns with Olukoyede’s earlier stance on rehabilitating convicted internet fraudsters through reduced sentences.
