EKO HOT BLOG reports that this resolution was announced by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, following a closed-door session where lawmakers discussed some state governments’ attempts to circumvent the Supreme Court’s July 11 ruling.
Meanwhile, the Senate rejected a bill that aimed to regulate private investigations in Nigeria.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu West), sought to establish a framework for licensing and regulating private investigators, setting professional standards, and preventing fraud.
Senator Ngwu emphasized that private investigation is a recognized profession in many countries, including the U.K. and U.S., and highlighted its growing importance. He pointed out that many private investigators have backgrounds in law enforcement or intelligence, and the bill aimed to maintain ethical standards in the field.
However, while some senators supported the bill, others, including Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Iya Abbas, criticized it, calling it unnecessary and potentially problematic. Senate President Godswill Akpabio suggested the bill be withdrawn for further legislative input, which Senator Ngwu agreed to.
