Residents of Ajah, Lagos State, have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene in the planned imposition of a traditional ruler in their community, a move they claim could lead to unrest.

During a peaceful protest at the governor’s office on Monday, General Secretary of the Ajah Community, Kazeem Odunlami, emphasized the community’s long-standing opposition to the imposition of a monarch not rooted in their traditions.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he explained that the Ajah community has, for over 300 years, been governed by the Baale (Olomodi) system, which aligns with their culture and heritage.

He called on the governor to prevent a potential conflict, stating, “When the state of anarchy emerges, there will be no peace. We are begging the government to save our souls from this imposition.”

Odunlami also clarified that the chieftaincy title of those seeking the rulership of Ajah is not historically tied to governance in the community. He urged the governor to take swift action to uphold Ajah’s customs and prevent any unrest.

Addressing the protesters, Ayodeji Haruna, Director of Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement for Lagos State, assured the group that their concerns would be conveyed to the governor.

Haruna praised the peaceful nature of their demonstration, stating that the matter would be addressed promptly.

The protest follows an earlier demonstration at the Lagos State House of Assembly on November 28, highlighting the community’s persistent opposition to the planned imposition.

Residents fear the disruption of their cultural harmony if the government does not act to prevent the change.

The Ajah community continues to advocate for the preservation of their historical leadership structure, appealing to the state government to respect their traditions and ensure peace.
