The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has reminded all employers in the state of their obligation to file annual tax returns for the 2024 financial year by January 31, 2025, as stipulated in the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) Cap P8 LFN 2004 (as amended).

As per Section 81 of PITA, employers are legally required to submit annual returns detailing the emoluments paid to employees, including taxes deducted and remitted to relevant tax authorities.
These returns should be filed no later than January 31 each year and cover income and taxes paid in the previous year (2024).
Dr. Subair stressed, “Employers must prioritize the timely filing of their annual income tax returns to avoid penalties.
Submitting returns on or before the deadline ensures compliance with the law and supports accurate revenue tracking, which is essential for Lagos State’s fiscal planning and sustainability.”
To streamline the tax filing process, the LIRS has transitioned to a fully digital system.
Employers are now required to submit their annual tax returns solely through the LIRS e-Tax portal at https://etax.lirs.net.
Manual submissions are no longer accepted. Mr. Subair highlighted the e-Tax platform’s security, user-friendliness, and convenience for employers managing their tax responsibilities.
Employers must include the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) of all employees in their annual tax returns.
Employees without a TIN should generate one immediately on the e-Tax platform to prevent any disruptions during the filing process.
