Former Manchester United manager Casey Stoney has been named head coach of the Canada women’s national team.
The 42-year-old former England captain will assume the role immediately and is set to lead the team in a three-match series at the Pinatar Cup in Spain this February.

Stoney takes over after Canada began searching for a new coach following the dismissal of English coach Bev Priestman in the aftermath of the 2024 Olympic Games drone scandal.
Previously, Stoney managed Manchester United, guiding the team to promotion to the Women’s Super League and securing consecutive fourth-place finishes in England’s top tier before being dismissed by National Women’s Soccer League side San Diego Wave in June.
“I am honoured to join Canada Soccer,” said Stoney.
“Canada has a proud tradition in women’s football and I am excited to work with such a talented group of players.
“Together with the federation’s new leadership, we will strive to build on past successes and continue to grow the sport in Canada on and off the field.
“I look forward to the journey ahead and to engaging with the incredible passion of Canadian soccer fans.”
During the Paris Olympics, Canada’s coaching staff faced controversy when two members were sent home for flying a drone over New Zealand’s training session before a group-stage match. As a result, FIFA imposed a year-long ban on Priestman, and Canada, who had won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, were penalized with a six-point deduction.

Stoney, a former player, boasts an impressive career, having won 12 major trophies with Chelsea, Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, Lincoln Ladies, and Liverpool. She earned 130 caps for England, captaining her country through three World Cups and leading Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics.
After retiring from playing in February 2018 at age 35, Stoney transitioned into coaching. She initially joined the Lionesses under Phil Neville before taking the reins at Manchester United later that year.
