The event, which took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), drew an emotional crowd of family members, sports figures, teammates, and dignitaries.
According to Ekohotblog, It was organized by legendary footballer Dr. Segun Odegbami, a long-time advocate for preserving the legacy of Nigeria’s sports heroes.
Air Peace Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, gave a heartfelt speech that captured the mood of the evening. He praised the athletes for giving their all to Nigeria at a time when there were little or no financial rewards for sporting success.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s withdrawal from the 1976 Olympics due to the anti-apartheid stance, Onyema emphasized the personal and national sacrifices these athletes made and expressed regret that more wasn’t done earlier to honour them.

He further lauded Dr. Odegbami for constantly pushing for national recognition of unsung sports legends, calling him a defender of Nigeria’s historical memory.
This tribute night is part of Air Peace’s broader Sports Diplomacy Ambassadors program, which began in 2022. The initiative has already honoured the 1980 AFCON-winning team and other key sports figures, providing honorees with lifetime business-class travel privileges.
The event is not just a celebration, it’s a strategic investment in Nigeria’s image. For African travel agents and tourism promoters, it offers a new angle: blending culture, travel, and sports.
