Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has approved the appointment of Prof. Francisca Bassey as the new acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS).
This decision follows the immediate dissolution of the university’s Governing Council.

The announcement was made on Sunday, January 26, 2025, by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill.
In addition to Prof. Bassey’s appointment, the governor named Dr. Fidelis Ugbo as the institution’s pro-chancellor.
According to the statement, Hon. Francis Ettah and Prof. Susan Etim were also appointed as members of the new Governing Council.

The full list of the council’s members is expected to be released shortly, with all appointments taking effect immediately.
Governor Otu directed the outgoing acting Vice Chancellor to hand over to Prof. Bassey promptly, ensuring a smooth transition and fostering a peaceful academic session at the university.

“The state government is committed to the welfare and well-being of staff and students, as well as maintaining high standards in teaching and learning at the university,” the statement read.
The governor also urged the newly appointed Governing Council to work diligently in addressing any challenges and improving the institution’s image.
