On Friday, the U.S. leader declared he “absolutely” planned to impose tariffs on the EU in the future.
Reacting to the move, a European Commission spokesperson criticized the tariffs, calling them economically disruptive and inflationary.
“The European Union regrets the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China,” the spokesperson said. “Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides.”

The EU warned that any arbitrary or unfair tariffs imposed on European goods would be met with firm retaliation. “At this time, we are not aware of any additional tariffs being imposed on EU products,” the spokesperson noted.
Despite the rising tensions, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining low tariffs and supporting a stable, rules-based trading system.
Officials stressed the importance of strengthening economic ties with the U.S., highlighting that their trade and investment relationship is the largest in the world.
“There is a lot at stake,” the EU official emphasized. “We should both be looking at strengthening this relationship.”
