“Obviously, politically, Lagos is sitting on a time bomb,” General Bashexy declared.
“Before it gets to a breaking point, something needs to be done urgently. Otherwise, it will weaken governance, and many leaders will struggle to find their voices because the majority of their followers would have already lost their ears.”
General Bashexy emphasized the importance of respecting democratic principles, warning that recent political events in Lagos are setting dangerous precedents.
He stressed that in a true democracy, decisions should reflect the will of the majority, and the rule of law must be upheld.
“Democracy, they say, is about numbers,” he noted. “In a democratic system, the rule of law should be respected, and decisions should be made based on the majority’s will.
But the political events in Lagos at the moment are looking like establishing negative precedents.”
He further expressed concerns about the growing sense of political disillusionment among citizens, warning that if trust is not restored, it could lead to severe political, social, and economic consequences.
“If trust isn’t restored, the situation can escalate into long-term political crises or even total state failure, or birth a third force,” he cautioned.
General Bashexy did not mince words about the responsibility of political leaders to restore public trust and uphold democratic values. He urged them to lead by example, noting that when leaders fail to set good examples, society suffers both immediately and in the long run.
“When leaders fail to set good examples, society suffers,” he said. “Please don’t let Lagosians – both citizens and residents – lose faith in you. It can lead to serious political, social, and economic consequences.”
In a passionate call to action, General Bashexy urged key stakeholders to intervene and prevent the situation from reaching a breaking point. He specifically addressed:
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
Members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC)
Traditional Rulers
Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) Members
Political Leaders and Other Stakeholders
“Let the majority enjoy democracy as it should be,” General Bashexy urged, emphasizing the need for inclusive governance and transparent leadership.
Political analysts have described General Bashexy’s warning as timely and necessary, urging Lagos leaders to heed his call before the situation deteriorates.
Some analysts noted that the state’s political climate is becoming increasingly polarized, making it imperative for leaders to engage in open dialogue and reconciliation.
The warning has resonated with many Lagosians, who have expressed growing concerns about the political atmosphere.
