The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Keisha, will face disciplinary action for closing the Independence Bridge without approval.
Keisha had announced that the bridge (Marina-bound) would be closed from April 1 for repairs. However, the sudden closure caused heavy traffic, leaving many commuters stranded for hours. Some transport fares also surged from ₦800 to ₦2,000.

A former BBNaija housemate, JMK, shared her experience, saying she spent eight hours in traffic trying to get home from the airport.

Following public complaints, Minister Umahi ordered the bridge to be reopened immediately. He stated that he was not informed of the decision and emphasized that any future road or bridge closures must go through the Permanent Secretary and the Minister for approval.
Umahi apologized to Lagos residents and President Bola Tinubu for the inconvenience.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also visited the site and took responsibility for the situation. He explained that the bridge is old and needs repairs to prevent future problems.
While apologizing to Lagosians, Sanwo-Olu urged residents to support the project. He advised people to work remotely if possible and avoid unnecessary trips to Victoria Island during the three-week repair period.
