Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has withdrawn the invitation extended to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, regarding an incident during the recent Sallah festivities.
Although the invitation has been withdrawn, the IGP has instructed the Kano State Police Command to obtain the Emir’s statement through appropriate channels. The directive was communicated via Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Emir Sanusi had been invited to explain his role in an alleged murder that occurred on March 30, 2025, after Eid prayers. He attended the prayers by car but returned to the palace on horseback, which led to a confrontation involving local youths. One person, Usman Sagiru, lost his life, and several others were injured.
According to Adejobi, the decision to withdraw the invitation followed consultations with respected national stakeholders. He emphasized that the police are committed to professional conduct and aim to avoid any action that could be seen as politically motivated.
The statement explained that the initial invitation was to gather Sanusi’s perspective on the events that led to a breakdown of law and order in Kano. However, after receiving counsel and to prevent misinterpretation of police motives, the Force Intelligence Department was tasked with obtaining his statement instead.
Prior to the incident, intelligence reports indicated that both disputed Emirs in Kano—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—were planning separate Durbar processions.
To avert a potential clash, the IGP deployed the Coordinating DIG for the North West, DIG Abubakar Sadiq, to mediate between both parties and the Kano State Government. It was agreed that no Durbar would be held and that neither Emir would ride horseback on Sallah Day.
Despite this, Emir Sanusi rode on horseback in a procession after Eid prayers, accompanied by local vigilantes. The resulting unrest led to the tragic confrontation.
