EKO HOT BLOG reports that amid widespread dissatisfaction with the APC’s leadership, the ADC is being seen by members of the opposition coalition as a credible and strategically positioned platform to mount a serious challenge.
Originally founded in 2005 as the Alliance for Democratic Change under Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, the party transformed into the African Democratic Congress after its official registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2006.
The party’s national profile received a significant boost in 2018 when the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), championed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, merged with the ADC. At the time, the CNM said it aimed “to work with others for bringing about desirable change in Nigeria’s polity and governance.”
According to political analysts, the ADC now presents a unique advantage among opposition platforms due to its nationwide grassroots structure, absence of internal legal wrangling, and a cohesive leadership.
Prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Liyel Imoke are said to be considering the ADC as the coalition’s new political home.
One analyst told Vanguard, “It has a well-organized grassroots framework and leadership structure down to the polling unit level. This makes it a natural choice for any serious coalition looking to win in 2027.”
The party’s ideological focus on African-centred governance, unity, and transformation resonates with the vision of the opposition coalition.

In a move that signals openness to coalition building, National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu has reportedly agreed to step down to make room for new leadership. Deputy National Secretary, Nkem Ukandu, confirmed the ADC has amended its constitution to accommodate new partners.
An insider in the coalition revealed to Sunday Vanguard, “The ADC is one of the few parties yet to be infiltrated by the APC. Its clean structure and the Chairman’s willingness to open up leadership are major attractions.”
With the Independent National Electoral Commission unlikely to register a new party before 2027, the ADC is being positioned as a practical and ready-to-use vehicle for opposition unity.
