As part of his oversight responsibilities, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu, led a site inspection on Monday to monitor the progress of critical development projects across the state.
Ekohotblog reports that the highlight of the inspection was the visit to the Alaba Transnational Market, where government officials reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to prioritizing former occupants in the ongoing shop reallocation process.

Speaking at the site, Hon. Ogunkelu assured stakeholders of the Assembly’s firm legislative support to ensure the project’s timely completion.
“As lawmakers, we remain committed to enacting and supporting policies that align with the THEMES agenda of Mr. Governor, aimed at building a Greater Lagos for all,” he said.

He also encouraged market leaders and traders to continue cooperating with the government to ensure a smooth and inclusive redevelopment process.
“We recognize the sacrifices being made by the traders and we appreciate their patience. This development is for the benefit of all, and their continued cooperation is crucial,” Ogunkelu added.
A senior official from the Ministry of Physical Planning, who joined the inspection, emphasized the government’s plan to transform the market into a modern commercial hub.
“This market will not just be rebuilt—it will be transformed into a world-class trading center that reflects the vision of a modern Lagos,” the official said.

Representatives of the Alaba Traders Association welcomed the lawmakers’ visit but urged the government to follow through on its promises.
“We appreciate the presence of Hon. Ogunkelu and the state officials. What we want is fairness and assurance that our people will not be displaced permanently,” said, a trader representative.
