EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the discovery on Thursday, stating that the bodies were found downstream of a bridge where floodwaters had surged.
According to Arah, the torrential rain on Wednesday dislodged the sand dunes that had concealed the corpses for weeks. “The two dead bodies were recovered today at the downstream of the bridge. Yesterday’s rains that flowed along the water channel washed away sand dunes that covered the dead bodies. The bodies were decomposed beyond recognition,” he said.
The Mokwa flood, which submerged buildings and displaced thousands, has already claimed 207 confirmed lives, while over 700 persons remain missing, according to the state government.
Earlier in the week, Niger State Governor Umar Bago, through his Deputy, Yakubu Garba, disclosed these figures during a condolence meeting with a delegation led by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, in Minna.
Garba said the government is working closely with professionals to ascertain the root causes of the disaster. He described the incident as a national calamity, adding that more than 3,000 households have been affected.
A government report also noted that approximately 400 houses were damaged, with 283 homes and 50 shops completely destroyed by the raging floodwaters.

In response, Al-Mustapha said the purpose of his delegation’s visit was to offer condolences and to engage stakeholders on long-term flood prevention strategies. He added that the group would hold further consultations with the traditional council in Mokwa.
Assessment reports on the disaster are still awaited as recovery and search operations continue.
