The Nigerian Police Force has arrested 28 suspects believed to be connected to the deadly attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Gunmen, suspected to be herders, had on June 14, 2025, invaded the community, killing several residents and displacing thousands.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, while addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, confirmed the arrests. He stated that police operatives are actively pursuing other suspects involved in the Yelwata killings.
Egbetokun clarified that out of the 28 people arrested, two were later released after investigations revealed they were unknowingly used as bait to apprehend the remaining 26 key suspects.
The IGP assured Nigerians that the police remain in firm control of the security situation and are taking steps to recover illegally acquired small arms and light weapons from unauthorized individuals.
He further noted that security operatives are intensifying border patrols to curb the entry of irregular migrants and possible arms smuggling into the country.
Egbetokun also revealed that the suspects arrested in connection with the Yelwata killings will soon face prosecution in court.

Additionally, he disclosed that 22 other suspects recently arrested in Jos, Plateau State, over the murder of nine people who were travelling to Quanpan for a wedding, will also be arraigned soon.
The IGP reassured the public of the police’s commitment to ensuring justice and restoring peace in affected communities.
