The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) has reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Speaking after the 100th NEC meeting held on Monday in Abuja, PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, confirmed Anyanwu’s reinstatement and announced that the 101st NEC meeting would hold on July 23, 2025, to finalise plans for the upcoming national convention.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the PDP has faced deep internal divisions since the 2023 presidential election. The crisis worsened after the party leadership informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the National Secretary position, triggering fresh disputes.
On Sunday, Damagum met with Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), and other key leaders, where they reaffirmed support for Anyanwu and the scheduled National Caucus meeting.
However, a rival PDP faction led by Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, and other national officers insisted the NEC meeting proceed with Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary.
This split reflects the larger power struggle within the PDP. One bloc, aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and supported by Governors Peter Mbah, Douye Diri, Ademola Adeleke, and others, opposed Anyanwu’s return. Another faction, backed by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Plateau Governor Caleb Muftwang, and others, supported Anyanwu.
Security agencies cordoned off the party secretariat, forcing PDP leaders to relocate the emergency meeting to Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. The leaders later proceeded to Wadata Plaza for the NEC meeting.

Addressing journalists, Damagum said, “We have resolved that Senator Anyanwu will continue as National Secretary. The next NEC on July 23 will properly address convention matters.”
He assured that the PDP has strong internal mechanisms to resolve its challenges.
