Nigerian boxing legend Ike Ibeabuchi has announced plans to return to professional boxing at age 52, over two decades after his last fight. “Yes, I am planning a return to boxing. I just want to become a world champion, and my age does not matter,” Ibeabuchi told The PUNCH.
Known as “The President,” Ibeabuchi rose to prominence in the late 1990s, securing major victories against top contenders David Tua and Chris Byrd. His 1997 win over Tua remains one of the highest punch-count heavyweight fights in history. However, his career was abruptly halted after legal troubles and mental health challenges, including a sexual assault conviction that was later overturned.
The Nigerian boxer, inspired by Buster Douglas’s famous victory over Mike Tyson in 1990, began his boxing journey as an amateur before turning professional in the United States, where he quickly gained attention for his power and stamina.
After years of personal battles and immigration issues, Ibeabuchi is now working with UK-based promoter Ben Wilson to stage his return. Training videos have surfaced showing him in preparation, raising excitement about his comeback.

A fight contract reportedly involving former Mike Tyson conqueror Danny Williams has been circulated online, with the bout expected to happen by July 5, 2025. Williams, 55-33, last fought in 2023.
Ibeabuchi expressed readiness to face any challenger. “Boxing is about brain work. I may be older, but I have the experience and heart to compete,” he said.
