Peace pact dissolves political groups, restores calm in Rivers State.
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly preparing to reinstate suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, along with the Rivers State House of Assembly before the end of July. This follows a successful peace meeting brokered by Tinubu between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that sources from the Presidency confirmed that Tinubu met privately with Fubara, Wike, and key lawmakers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja last Thursday, where reconciliation terms were agreed upon. Although Fubara’s reinstatement was initially expected in September when the six-month emergency rule would expire, the President now plans to restore the governor this month after his diplomatic trips to Saint Lucia and Brazil.
The Rivers political crisis, which began in October 2023, escalated after 27 pro-Wike lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara, leading to violent incidents, including bombings and arson. In March 2025, Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the Assembly, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator.
As part of the peace deal, Fubara will serve out his tenure but will not contest for a second term in 2027. Wike will have the authority to nominate chairmen for all 23 local government areas, while the Assembly will drop impeachment proceedings against Fubara. The governor also agreed to pay outstanding allowances owed to the pro-Wike lawmakers.

Both Wike and Fubara have publicly confirmed the resolution, expressing their commitment to sustaining peace. Fubara has since disbanded his core political support groups, signaling his reintegration into Wike’s political camp.
