The road project, completed over a period of about 20 months, features reinforced concrete paving and well-constructed drainage systems—effectively addressing the erosion and flooding challenges residents had faced during the rainy season.
In the Dopemu area, the Governor also inaugurated the newly rebuilt 1.8-kilometre Dopemu Road—now renamed Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road—in the Agege Local Government Area. The upgraded roadway is designed to accommodate increased traffic volume and enhance connectivity.
Accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the state cabinet, Sanwo-Olu described the infrastructure projects as vital steps toward improving transportation and mobility in Alimosho.
Before its comprehensive upgrade, Abaranje Road was in a deteriorated condition with narrow lanes and frequent structural failures, causing prolonged hardship for motorists. As the population grew, the road became increasingly impassable and hazardous for vehicles.

In response, the Governor transformed Abaranje Road from a single-lane path into a dual carriageway, complete with solar-powered streetlights and pedestrian walkways.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the project’s completion represents a significant achievement in his administration’s efforts to manage traffic in Alimosho. He emphasized that the ultimate aim is to enhance the quality of life for residents and ensure faster travel times for road users.
“The reconstruction of this famous Abaranje Road is a testament to our determination to bring relief to residents and road users on this axis. This project is more than a road expansion and reconstruction, it is a life-changing experience for our citizens living on this road. The means of livelihoods lost due to the deplorable condition of the road have now been restored.
“Alimosho has reaped a lot of democracy dividends from our Government. We have handed over strategic roads in this council to combat heavy traffic congestion. This is another critical intervention that is supporting our efforts towards tackling congestion. Aside from fostering connectivity, this infrastructure will galvanise the local economy and improve quality of life.”
Sanwo-Olu led members of the State executive council to inspect the well-known Ikotun Roundabouts, which are widely considered a major cause of persistent traffic congestion in the area.
As a long-term solution to the daily gridlock, the Governor proposed the construction of a flyover to ease traffic flow at the busy junction. He also evaluated how the proposed structure would affect local livelihoods, vehicle movement, and pedestrian safety.
Sanwo-Olu said: “Ikotun Roundabout is a critical intersection we are working on and it is part of the road projects we want to take on in Alimosho. There are traffic issues and street trading issues that are resulting in congestion in the area. The issues are complex but it is for us to move in and solve the problems. We have done extensive assessment of how best to proceed on the project.”
“I want to assure you that this is not going to be the last stop in Alimosho. Projects commissioning will be a continuous exercise for us in this area.

As a Government, we are committed to ensuring that every part of the State is not left untouched. I want to emphasise that our vision is to leave behind a world class infrastructure that will last for decades.”
Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, stated that the upgraded roads would greatly reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel time, and offer a safer and more comfortable commuting experience for residents.
He emphasized that the successful delivery of these key road projects reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s strong commitment to closing infrastructure gaps, enhancing mobility, and improving the overall quality of life for the people of Lagos.
Speaking on behalf of the community, the Onikotun of Ikotun, Oba Azeez Gbadabiu Asiwaju, expressed gratitude to the Governor for responding to the residents’ call for the rehabilitation of Abaranje Road. He added that the improved infrastructure would help open up previously inaccessible parts of the area.
