The Lagos State Government on Thursday announced its willingness to collaborate with China through the China Nigeria Low Carbon Demonstration initiative (Nextier) on the Lekki Low Carbon Demonstration Zone (LLCDZ) Project aimed at reducing carbon emissions across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, shared this during a strategic meeting with the team from the China Nigeria Low Carbon Demonstration Initiative (Nextier) held at the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in Alausa, Ikeja.

He emphasized that the partnership would be highly impactful as the project aligns with Lagos State’s climate goals and policy direction.
Wahab noted that the state has already implemented several key initiatives to promote climate friendly development. He referenced the 2023 Lagos International Climate Change Summit, where the Lagos Climate Adaptation Resilience Action Plan was introduced.
He also mentioned that last year, the Ministry of Environment in Nigeria and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the African Solar Belt Initiative to support Nigeria’s efforts toward low carbon industrialization.
According to Wahab, the Lekki Free Trade Zone was selected as the pilot location for the project because it represents one of the most advanced and forward thinking areas in Nigeria.
The project, he explained, aims to lower the climate risk index, reduce the prevalence of airborne diseases, and cut down on air pollution, ultimately benefiting public health.”I greatly appreciate this laudable project as it is envisaged to increase accessibility to clean energy”.

Wahab further highlighted that the global transition to clean energy will create job opportunities, enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market, and ensure environmental compliance. He thanked the visiting team and assured them of the Ministry’s support, including access to data, personnel, and funding to facilitate the project’s success.
Responding to this, Mr. Michael Ivenso, Director of the National Council on Climate Change from the Presidency, noted that the Chinese officials are visiting to strengthen the Nigeria China partnership and encourage private sector involvement.
He added that Lagos State offers a favorable environment for private sector participation and presents a range of promising investment opportunities.
