The situation has become even more worrying as healthcare workers, those on the frontlines are also being infected.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, at least 38 health workers have contracted the disease, with 3 doctors losing their lives. He described this as a serious warning sign that calls for urgent action from both government and the public.
For residents of Lagos, the concern is real. Although the state is not considered a major hotspot for Lassa fever, its large population and constant movement of people increase the risk of the disease spreading quickly if not contained.
Lassa fever is mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated food, but it can also spread from person to person. Many people may not even show symptoms, yet they can still pass on the virus, making it harder to control.
To protect residents, the state government has launched a public awareness campaign focused on prevention, early detection, and proper hygiene practices. Health officials are also strengthening emergency response systems, training medical workers, and improving surveillance across the state.

Residents are being advised to keep their environments clean, store food properly, avoid contact with rodents, and seek medical attention immediately if they notice symptoms such as fever, weakness, or unusual bleeding.
Authorities reassured the public that measures are in place to manage any potential cases, but emphasised that everyone has a role to play in stopping the spread.
