EKO HOT BLOG reports that reliable sources within the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu-Ode and the Ogun State Government confirmed the monarch’s death on Sunday, though official announcements are still being awaited.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers and a revered figure across the Yoruba kingdom and the nation at large. Known for his wisdom, forthrightness, and statesmanship, the monarch played a key role in traditional leadership, national discourse, and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.
His reign, which spanned more than six decades, witnessed significant social, political, and economic changes in Ijebuland and Nigeria. Oba Adetona was widely respected for his outspoken views on governance and transparency, often using his influence to advocate for good leadership and development in the country.
A source close to the palace noted that while the full circumstances of the monarch’s passing are yet to be disclosed, preparations are ongoing for a formal announcement from both the royal household and the Ogun State Government.

The passing of the Awujale marks the end of an era for Ijebuland and the Yoruba traditional institution. Tributes are expected to pour in from political, religious, and cultural leaders as the nation mourns a deeply respected royal figure.
