The Lagos State Government on Thursday announced the reopening of Purple Mall, located on Freedom Way in Lekki Phase I, for commercial activities.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, gave the directive during an inspection of the mall alongside senior government officials.

Wahab explained that once the incident was brought to his attention, the state initiated an investigation and requested all relevant documents from Purple Mall management.
“We called for the necessary documents and launched an investigation. After reviewing everything, we confirmed that due process was followed and the required approvals were in place,” Wahab said.
He noted that while an investigation by the Police is still ongoing, the state government has completed its own administrative review.
“The mall can’t remain sealed indefinitely. We were satisfied with our findings, but the Police investigation, which concerns a fatality, is beyond our control,” he added.
Wahab described the incident as tragic, referring to the death of a young man whose car reportedly fell from the top floor of the parking structure.
He also addressed criticism on social media, where some accused the state of neglecting proper oversight in approving the mall’s construction, mentioning agencies like the Lagos Safety Commission, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Lagos State Physical Planning Authority.
He explained that the facility had initially been shut down to allow for a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident, to assess adherence to building safety standards, and to check for any environmental or structural issues.
