Two teenage boys, Ayuba Ishaku and Yakubu Haruna, who were abducted by Boko Haram in 2019 at age nine, have escaped captivity and reunited with their families in Borno State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the boys arrived at the ITE Divisional Police Headquarters in Maiduguri around 5:30 p.m. on July 12, 2025, after fleeing a terrorist enclave in the Kukawa axis.

According to ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, the boys were taken during a raid on Mandaragrau village, Biu Local Government Area, on 29 December 2019.
After their abduction, they were transported to Mangari, Tumbun Mota in Baga, where they were held by insurgents. During their stay, they served as domestic aides and were trained in servicing firearms.
They reportedly took the chance to flee on the night of July 8, 2025, when many insurgents had left for an operation. Navigating through bushes and unknown terrains, they reached Maiduguri after four days.
On arrival, the boys were placed under police protection, and efforts began to locate their families. Ayuba’s father, Mr. Ishaku Gaji, confirmed their identity and recalled the 2019 mass abduction incident.

They have now been handed over to the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs for full rehabilitation under the Borno State Model, while the Commissioner of Police praised their bravery and urged public vigilance.
