The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, has warned corps members serving in the state that wearing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform does not place them above the law.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the NYSC, while enhancing the safety and welfare of corps members serving across Ogun State.

Addressing the delegation, the Commissioner of Police assured corps members that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property and would continue to prioritise their security throughout their service year.

Drawing from his own experience as a former corps member, Ojajuni urged the young graduates to use the service year to develop discipline, leadership qualities and good character.

He, however, cautioned them against engaging in criminal activities or keeping bad company, stressing that the NYSC uniform does not provide immunity from prosecution if any corps member is found to have violated the law.

“The NYSC uniform offers no immunity against criminal liability should an infraction be established against anyone,” he said.

The police commissioner also encouraged corps members to remain worthy ambassadors of the NYSC scheme, their families, states of origin and Nigeria.

As part of efforts to prevent crime among young people, Ojajuni introduced the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), describing it as a community-based initiative aimed at discouraging cultism, drug abuse and other social vices through value reorientation.

He disclosed that the Ogun State Police Command plans to expand the campaign to schools and communities across the state to deepen youth engagement and strengthen crime prevention.

The commissioner further urged NYSC officials to maintain strict supervision and discipline among corps members, noting that adherence to established rules is essential to producing responsible citizens.

He also recalled the command’s recent rescue of 18 corps members whose vehicle broke down at night along the Ogbere-Ijebu Ode road, reaffirming the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents in the state.

Responding, the Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Adewuyi Frances, commended the police command for its support and proactive security measures, particularly its mentorship of corps members serving in police formations.

She pledged the scheme’s continued cooperation with the police through intelligence sharing and other initiatives aimed at improving security across the state.
