A recent graduate of Benue State University, Makurdi, Wilfred Amondo, has reportedly died under mysterious circumstances in Lagos shortly after watching a football match.
The young man, who was working as a security guard in the Lekki area, is said to have passed away shortly after watching Chelsea’s Club World Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, 13 July 2025.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to friends, Amondo had shared posts on Facebook during the match, saying, “Chelsea de beat PSG, na Man Utd fans come de cry. I no just understand,” and, “Bet Chelsea FC to win now, no come say I no tell u.”
Initial reports from his workplace claimed he slumped and died while on duty. However, conflicting accounts from close acquaintances and CCTV footage have raised serious concerns.
One of his colleagues, Ishaku Adamu, stated that Amondo called a co-worker to cover for him so he could rest. “After match finished he started chatting on Facebook. Around 12am Wilfred called his colleague to come and cover his area because he wanted to go and rest. So after he go to sleep, he lay down he never wake up again,” Adamu explained.
However, Terlumun Dzungwe, who addressed a formal plea to the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, challenged the official account, noting that CCTV footage did not align with the company’s version of events.
According to Dzungwe, Wilfred’s body arrived in Benue on Tuesday, 15 July, bearing injuries that suggest he may have met a violent death, not a natural one.
Dzungwe described Amondo as a hardworking orphan who had struggled to sponsor himself through university by working as a wheelbarrow pusher and Keke rider.
He added that Amondo only moved to Lagos two months ago with the help of a friend to secure a security job, making his sudden death even more painful for loved ones and his community in Buruku LGA.
“In reviewing the CCTV footage of the incident, the situation became more complicated,” Dzungwe stated. “The footage does not clearly support the company’s claim. Moreover, injuries on his body point to a different and possibly violent cause of death.”
He lamented the absence of family support, noting that it was a friend and company contributions that made it possible to bring the body back to Benue.
Calling for a formal investigation, Dzungwe added, “You have always been a voice for the voiceless, and I earnestly plead that you take swift action by initiating an investigation into this matter.”
Social media users have also weighed in, with one suggesting Amondo may have been attacked by individuals attempting to seize possible betting winnings from the Chelsea-PSG game.
Another commented, “Nigeria has failed a graduate working as a security guard. Even if he won big from the bet, what protection did he have?”

Amondo’s story has sparked outrage and sorrow, shedding light once again on the plight of young Nigerians striving for survival under difficult economic conditions.
The exact cause of his death remains uncertain, as calls for justice continue to grow louder both online and offline.
