As Lagos State welcomes a new wave of elected leaders at the local government and LCDA levels, respected political voice and senior legislative aide, Mr. Bashir Oluwakemi Hassan, popularly known as General Bashexy, has issued a direct and thought-provoking open letter to all the newly sworn-in chairmen.
Ekohotblog reports that in his message, General Bashexy began with warm congratulations to the chairmen, describing their emergence as a reflection of the people’s trust.

However, he quickly shifted tone, calling for deep reflection and urgent readiness to match the expectations of governance.
“This is no small achievement, and it is worthy of acknowledgment,” he wrote. “However, beyond the celebration, there is a need for sober reflection.”
According to him, while the elections brought political success, not all those elected are adequately prepared for the challenges of leadership.
Rather than being insulted by the statement, he urged the chairmen to accept the truth with humility and a commitment to personal growth.
“The truth is this: not all of you who have just been elected are prepared for this office,” he stated.
“Some of you are stepping into leadership positions that are bigger than your current capacity. That is not an insult; it is simply the truth.”
General Bashexy, a known loyalist of the APC, emphasized that grassroots leadership goes beyond titles and ceremonies.
He painted a realistic picture of local governance, bad roads, poor healthcare, unemployment, insecurity, and residents feeling neglected.
“Governance is not about clean photo shoot, nice graphics, branding, number in groups or slogans,” he said. “It is about smart and hard work. It requires a working brain and a working heart.”
He urged new leaders not to hide behind praise singers and protocols, especially when their communities are in dire need of action. Instead, he advised that they build competent teams, seek guidance, and consult stakeholders.
“If you don’t know what to do, ask,” he urged. “If you are weak in planning, build a strong team. If you are overwhelmed, consult experienced hands.”
In a strong but respectful tone, he added, “You must rise to the demands of your office, or you will fail it.”
General Bashexy highlighted that many chairmen rode to victory on the popularity of the party rather than personal performance or leadership strength.
Now that they are in office, he said, they must prove themselves with results, not rhetoric.
“Ask yourself: are you truly ready to solve these problems or are you just happy to be called ‘Chairman’?”
He concluded by reminding them that Lagos State is too strategic to be led with mediocrity. He emphasized that their current performance will either build their political legacy or destroy it.
“This message is not an attack. It is a wake-up call,” he said. “From one loyal party member to all elected chairmen: do better. Be better.”
He ended the message with a prayer:
“May you all have the wisdom to lead well.Amen.”
