In a move aimed at strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United States, the Mayor of Houston, John Whitmire, has advocated for the establishment of direct flights between Nigeria and Houston, as well as the opening of a Nigerian Consulate in the state of Texas.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the proposal emerged during a diplomatic meeting between Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, who represented Mayor Whitmire at the meeting held in Houston.

Highlighting Houston’s status as home to one of the largest Nigerian populations in the United States, Mayor Whitmire emphasized that both initiatives, direct flights and a consulate—would significantly enhance cooperation in key areas such as trade, consular services, and diaspora engagement.
He noted that these measures would not only boost bilateral relations but also improve services and opportunities for the Nigerian community residing in Houston.
In response to the proposals, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that Nigeria’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Aviation are actively considering both requests.
She expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria–US relations, describing the meeting as “productive and forward looking.”

Other attendees at the diplomatic engagement included Ambassador Chigozie Obi, former Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia; Mr. Kunle “Kay” Elegbede, International Community Relations Manager for Mayor Whitmire; Toni Jenkins, Consular Relations Manager; Isabella Benavides, International Affairs Liaison; and Yorke Sydney, a young intern at the Mayor’s office.
Sydney, who attended the meeting as part of her learning experience, expressed admiration for Hon. Dabiri-Erewa’s inspiring career path from journalism to politics.
