The group visited as part of a Ford Foundation-supported initiative aimed at encouraging Muslim religious leaders to actively oppose violence against women in northern Nigeria.
Emir Sanusi also urged all traditional leaders within his jurisdiction to uphold and protect the rights of women.
“I never believe in beating women, and those who do, are not beating their wives with the intention of reforming them,” Sanusi said.
“What we see today is even serious beating and injuring of women in name of reforming them.”
He firmly stated that any titleholder found committing such acts would have their traditional title revoked.

Emir Sanusi’s comments contribute to the growing efforts by religious and community leaders to challenge harmful practices often misrepresented as discipline or moral correction.
The Emir emphasized that violence, under any pretext, is incompatible with the principles of Islam.
