EKO HOT BLOG reports that Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, announced the release on Monday, emphasizing transparency in one of America’s most scrutinized historical events.
“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard said. She assured that the documents are being released with minimal redactions for privacy reasons.
The move follows an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump authorizing the declassification of files related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. King. The National Archives had earlier released files relating to JFK’s 1963 assassination and Robert Kennedy’s 1968 murder.
Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Although James Earl Ray was convicted for the murder and died in prison in 1998, King’s children have long questioned the official narrative. In a joint statement, Martin Luther King III and Bernice King expressed support for transparency but warned against misusing the records.
They recalled how their father had been subjected to invasive surveillance and disinformation efforts led by then FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, aimed at damaging both King and the broader civil rights movement. The siblings urged the public to approach the newly released files with empathy, restraint, and respect for their family’s enduring grief.

The release adds to ongoing debates surrounding U.S. political assassinations, including continued skepticism over official conclusions in the killings of both John and Robert Kennedy.
