- Former Ekiti governor slams late President Buhari, praises Tinubu’s accessibility
- Claims Nigerians celebrate leaders only after death
- Says no leader is spared from public criticism, even Jesus
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has distanced himself from posthumous praise of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that Nigerians only praise their leaders after death.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that recent interview with Channels TV, Fayose argued that Buhari did not perform as president and should not be venerated in death. He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its openness and accessibility since assuming office.

“People in Nigeria only praise the dead. When Buhari died, I wanted to criticise him. My wife stopped me,” he said.
Fayose made it clear that, in his view, Buhari’s administration failed to deliver. “Would you say Buhari performed? I am not among those praising the dead. Do not honour me when I die,” he declared.

He insisted that Tinubu is already showing a better approach to governance. “Tinubu is accessible. Was the former President accessible? A lot of things that happened under Buhari, do you still find them in the system?”
The former governor pushed back against criticisms of Tinubu’s leadership, insisting that no leader can please Nigerians entirely. “If you bring Jesus Christ to this country today, or Allah, they will criticise him,” he said. “If you bring our Lord Jesus Christ to power, bring Pastor Adeboye, Kumuyi and others… Nigerians will still abuse them.”
Fayose added that expecting perfection from any administration is unrealistic. “Have you seen a country where everything is rosy? I disagree with you,” he said.
He concluded by saying that, so far, Tinubu’s administration is on the right track. “So please, Nigeria to me, so far, so good.”
