EKO HOT BLOG reports that on Monday, July 28, the president hosted the triumphant team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. During the reception, he conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players. In addition, Tinubu announced a $100,000 cash gift and a three-bedroom house for each player. Members of the technical crew were also awarded $50,000 each.
This marks the first time in history the Super Falcons have been officially hosted by a Nigerian president after any of their ten WAFCON victories. Aisha Falode, President of the Nigeria Women’s Football League, confirmed the milestone and praised Tinubu for the gesture.
However, the announcement triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians on social media.
Wale Abdul questioned the decision to give out dollars, stating, “The richest countries in the world won’t give athletes such in dollars.”
Bolanle Juwon echoed similar sentiments: “Why dollars and not naira? Promoting another nation’s currency isn’t right.”
Daroking expressed concerns about priorities: “Yes, I’m happy for the Falcons, but there are underpaid soldiers and police who deserve better.”
Ezekwem Franklin criticized the amount, saying, “I’m not against the gift, but in a country battling poverty and insecurity, this is not thoughtful leadership.”
In contrast, Ghali Ismael commended Tinubu, writing, “I’m very impressed with the president’s reward to the team. Congratulations again.”

The Super Falcons had defeated host nation Morocco to claim their 10th WAFCON title.
