Troops of the Nigerian Army have reportedly neutralised a top commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province, identified as Abou Ameer, during a failed infiltration attempt in Madagali.
Security sources said the insurgent leader was killed alongside several fighters during the operation.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, Ameer personally led the insurgents in the attack on a military formation.
He was reportedly recently appointed as the Ameer, also known as Qaid, of Pulka, following the killing of his predecessor, Modu Kunduli, in Bama.
Sources indicated that the insurgents encountered strong resistance from troops, leading to significant casualties.
“The terrorists came under heavy fire from the well-coordinated troops and were repelled, resulting in significant casualties on their side,” the report stated.
The report added that several senior ISWAP commanders sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.
Those reportedly injured include Abu Ali Jango, Jundulla and Saleh Madagali.
Troops were said to have recovered weapons and intelligence materials from the scene, indicating sustained pressure on insurgent networks in the North-East.
Security sources noted that the operation reflects ongoing efforts by the military to degrade terrorist activities in the region.

The development comes days after troops, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, reportedly killed at least 61 ISWAP fighters during another failed infiltration attempt in Malam Fatori.
Military operations have continued to intensify across the North-East as authorities push to restore stability and prevent further attacks.
