A former Minister of Lands and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has strongly criticised the renewed push for the creation of a new “Obolo State” from Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking at an installation ceremony in Uyo, Eko Hot Blog reports that Essien described the people behind the movement as “land grabbers” and issued a stern warning that no state would ever be created from Ibibio land.

During his address, Chief Essien spoke about the long history of attempts to seize control of the Ibibio coastline. He reminded the audience of previous attempts to take over Ibibio land in 1993 and again in 2014, when some individuals collaborated to merge the area with a neighbouring state.

Essien called on key sociocultural organisations, such as Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, to take an active role in protecting the Ibibio heritage and advocating for justice. He strongly urged them to resist being used by people with personal political ambitions.
He also directed his message to the youth, encouraging them to be proud of their identity and work to preserve their language and traditions. Chief Essien concluded his speech with a powerful call for unity among all people of Akwa Ibom.
