The Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Kaosarat Bada Ambrose, expressed this during her welcome remarks on Saturday at the 2025 International Day of Cooperatives celebration, organized in partnership with the Lagos State Cooperative Federation (LASCOFED).
The occasion also featured an awards segment, where notable contributions by cooperative leaders and organizations in Lagos were honoured.
Speaking on the theme “Cooperatives Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World,” the commissioner said the theme resonates with Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu’s THEMES Plus Development Agenda and the Lagos State Development Plan 2052, both of which emphasize support for small businesses, grassroots empowerment, and economic fairness.
Ambrose pointed out that cooperatives, whether small savings groups at the community level or large agricultural enterprises, have consistently played a key role in poverty reduction, job creation, and grassroots engagement.
“Cooperatives remain a powerful mechanism for economic inclusion and social change. From small savings groups in local communities to major agricultural ventures, the cooperative approach continues to fight poverty, generate decent employment, and enhance community involvement,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address, LASCOFED President Mr. Oladipo Shobule underscored the global importance of 2025 being designated as the International Year of Cooperatives, marking just the second time the United Nations has made such a declaration.
Shobule hailed the recognition as a significant achievement for the worldwide cooperative movement and applauded cooperatives for their contributions to sustainable development.
“This theme reminds us that cooperatives are not merely economic structures, they are agents of social transformation.
In Lagos, our cooperatives have emerged as powerful instruments for community advancement, providing access to financial services, education, housing, agriculture, and entrepreneurship for thousands,” he said.
The gathering brought together cooperative leaders, government representatives, and development stakeholders who share a commitment to using cooperatives as drivers of inclusive economic growth and sustainable community advancement in Lagos and beyond.
