The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri Erewa, has praised the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) for its ongoing support in promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration in Nigeria.
She offered this commendation while receiving the Head of Mission of ICMPD in Nigeria, Ms. Isabelle Wolfsgruber, during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s office in Abuja.

Dr. Dabiri Erewa acknowledged ICMPD as a long-standing and valuable partner since the establishment of NiDCOM, especially in areas of strengthening migration governance and engaging the diaspora community.
She described the visit as both timely and strategic, reinforcing collaborative efforts to combat irregular migration and enhance the impact of diaspora contributions to national growth.
She pointed out that, despite ongoing warnings about the dangers of irregular migration, many individuals still undertake these risky journeys.
She noted that over 6000 Nigerians have already been repatriated this year alone through efforts led by the International Organisation for Migration and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI).
“These figures reflect why we must work even harder to discourage irregular migration and offer more viable alternatives,” she said.
The NiDCOM leader emphasized the need for well structured migration plans, comprehensive diaspora policies, and stronger international collaboration to address the root causes of irregular migration.
She also presented ICMPD representatives with a copy of NiDCOM’s Voluntary Assets and Skills Placement for Returnees (VASP R) policy, explaining that the document is currently undergoing review to increase its overall effectiveness.

In response, Isabelle Wolfsgruber commended NiDCOM for its forward thinking approach to diaspora engagement and reaffirmed ICMPD’s commitment to supporting the Commission in delivering sustainable migration initiatives.
She highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s diaspora not only in terms of financial remittances but also in the value of their knowledge, global networks, and technical expertise.
“You gave such a powerful intervention at the last diaspora summit, highlighting the full value of Nigerian remittances—not just financial, but intellectual and structural. That’s where the true development power lies,” she said.
Wolfsgruber further noted that ICMPD will maintain active engagement with donors and development partners to ensure alignment with NiDCOM’s strategic objectives for both current and upcoming programmes.
“This is not just about who funds what, but how we make the system work for itself. The Nigerian diaspora is a force for development, and we are proud to walk this journey with you,” she added.
