The new roads, stretching a total of 16.4 kilometres, have closed significant connectivity gaps and enhanced transportation access for residents in the area.
Locals, relieved by the road completion, welcomed the Governor with a cultural celebration, marking the inauguration with fanfare.
One of the major projects, Samuel Ekundayo Toga Road, a vital route leading into the town from the Marina axis, has been upgraded from a single lane to a dual carriageway, now complete with proper drainage.
The 7-kilometre road was constructed in two phases. The first phase extended from Joseph Dosu Junction to Toga Road, linking the Lagos Badagry Expressway. The second phase continued from Toga intersection to Aradagun Mosefejo Road.
Samuel Ekundayo Toga Road also functions as an alternative route to the Lagos Badagry Expressway via Limca, Ibereko, and Badagry Roundabouts.
Other roads inaugurated by the Governor include Aradagun Road, Mosafejo Road, Ilado Road, Imeke Road, and Hospital Road, all interconnected to improve movement within the division.
During the commissioning, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the projects were part of the State Government’s comprehensive Urban Regeneration and Intermodal Transportation Strategy aimed at rehabilitating and upgrading critical transport infrastructure to unlock economic and social potential in underserved communities.

He emphasized that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring no community is left behind.
The Governor added that the completion of the seven road projects showcases the Government’s dedication to tapping into the vast tourism and economic opportunities available in Badagry.
He said: “Recognizing Badagry’s rich cultural heritage, strategic location, and natural attractions, we deliberately prioritised provision of modern transport infrastructure that not only supports tourism but also stimulates broader socio-economic development in this part of Lagos. This approach aligns with our broader vision of inclusive growth, where no community or area is overlooked or left behind.
“Our inclusive infrastructure initiative has extended development far beyond the central and urban areas to the inner parts and less accessible corners of the metropolis, ensuring every community benefits from the fruits of progress. By delivering these road projects, we have once again demonstrated that our administration is not just about promises and hopes, but about concrete plans, execution, and a steadfast commitment to serve our citizenry better.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Badagry continues to hold significant economic value for both Lagos State and Nigeria, as the border town serves as a gateway to five West African nations.
He explained that his administration decided to reconstruct and upgrade Hospital Road to improve access to the well-known Agbalata Market, as well as to key tourist attractions and historical landmarks in Badagry.
These include the Agiya Tree Monument, Nigeria’s first storey building, the Early Missionary Cemetery, relics of the slave trade, the Town Hall, the Heritage Museum, and the Eko Theatre, among others.
The Governor also appealed to residents of Oko Afo, Ilogbo, Eremi, and Pota within the Badagry Division to remain patient as construction continues on a network of roads in their communities.
He assured them that efforts would be made to speed up the completion of the ongoing projects.
He said: “By upgrading Hospital Road, we are not just improving a road; we are reinforcing the foundation for sustainable tourism growth, economic development, and broader regional integration in our desire to transform Badagry. Our administration will continue to prioritise development in our inner cities.
“I am aware that in the past, some residents of the Badagry Division felt neglected and yearned for Government’s presence in providing infrastructure to boost local socio-economic activities. I assure you that we are sparing no effort to fully harness Badagry’s tourism potential by providing the necessary infrastructure to complement and accelerate its growth.”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola, stated that the projects reflect the Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure development and improved intra-community connectivity throughout the State.
He explained that the infrastructure improvements were strategically planned to ease the movement of people and goods, strengthen the community’s resilience to flooding, and raise the overall quality of life for residents in Badagry.
Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Honorable Babatunde Hunpe, expressed appreciation to the Governor for modernising the town through these impactful projects.
He noted that the commissioning of the roads showcased visionary leadership and a strong commitment to delivering effective governance at the grassroots level.

“This intervention is a testament to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to infrastructural development in every part of Lagos. The seven roads being opened today will enhance mobility, stimulate local commerce, improve access to education, health care and social services.
The roads will open new doors of economic opportunities through tourism for our people,” Hunpe said.
