The Director-General of the Kano State Signage and Advertising Agency, Kabiru Dakata, has rejected suggestions that Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was driven by personal political ambition.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Dakata made the clarification on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, where he explained that the governor’s planned move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was largely influenced by the need to better position Kano State to benefit from federal opportunities.

According to him, states governed by the ruling party at the centre often enjoy greater access to federal support and interventions.
“APC-controlled states tend to attract more attention and benefits from the Federal Government than opposition states,” Dakata said.

“Our neighbouring states under the APC are clearly benefiting more from the centre than Kano. There is nothing unusual if the Federal Government favours states governed by its own party,” he added.
Dakata argued that Governor Yusuf’s alignment with the APC should be viewed as a strategic move aimed at accelerating development in the state rather than a personal agenda.
He said the defection would open the door to increased funding and federally backed projects.
“If a political leader believes he can serve the people better on another platform, such a decision should be supported. This is about governance and performance, not personal ambition,” he stated.

Governor Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP last week after weeks of speculation and is expected to complete his defection to the APC on Monday, January 26, 2026.
In his resignation letter addressed to the NNPP chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor cited persistent internal crises within the party and the need to protect the broader interests of Kano residents as reasons for his exit.
Yusuf, who previously belonged to the APC between 2014 and 2018, is making a return to the ruling party, with APC flags already mounted at the Kano State Government House ahead of his official registration and reception.
Dakata also revealed that the state’s renewed alignment with the Federal Government has already yielded tangible results, particularly in infrastructure development.

He cited the Wuju-Wuju project as an example, noting that it had suffered delays due to funding challenges before now.
“All previous administrations — under Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Abdullahi Umar Ganduje — made efforts on the project. Governor Abba Yusuf also advanced it and completed some sections,” he said.
“With this new alignment, the Federal Government has now approved over ₦46 billion to push the Wuju-Wuju project forward,” Dakata disclosed.
He maintained that the development underscores the benefits of cooperation between state and federal authorities in driving sustainable growth.
