EKO HOT BLOG reports that Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, issued a statement on Thursday in response to an editorial by Daily Trust titled “Nigeria is Collapsing under Tinubu’s Watch.” He described the claims as exaggerated and misleading.
According to Dare, while the country is facing economic difficulties, the situation is not as dire as painted. He argued that the claim about 33 million Nigerians facing hunger stems from a projection in the Cadre Harmonisé report—a regional early warning tool—not a confirmed reality.
“The claim that 33 million Nigerians are at risk of hunger is a projection, not a confirmed reality,” Dare said.
He criticised the editorial as part of what he called a recurring trend of alarmist journalism, which, he said, ignores the government’s ongoing efforts to cushion hardship and stabilise the economy.
Dare highlighted several federal government interventions, including food releases from national reserves, agricultural development programmes, and direct cash transfer schemes aimed at easing the burden on Nigerians.
He also pointed to recent gains in the exchange rate, stating that the naira has appreciated against the dollar. According to him, ongoing tax reforms and social programmes are expected to yield greater impact by 2026.

“Criticism is welcome, but it must be rooted in truth, not fear-mongering,” he concluded.
