The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed what it described as a landmark ruling by a Canadian court allegedly designating Nigeria’s two leading political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as terrorist organizations.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Saturday, August 16, and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB said the reported decision validates its long-standing claim that Nigeria’s political structures are complicit in decades of repression and human rights abuses.
“This is a defining moment. The global community is beginning to see the truth about the political structures that have subjected our people to years of oppression,” the statement said.
The group recalled the Nigerian civil war of 1967–1970, stressing that the injustices of that period continue to shape its demand for self-determination.
IPOB maintained that its activities remain “non-violent” and legally driven, insisting its call for a peaceful separation is consistent with international norms.
It also criticized past efforts by the Nigerian government to proscribe its activities, describing them as politically motivated attempts to silence indigenous voices. IPOB further urged the international community to give greater attention to the rights of groups agitating for autonomy and justice.
However, as of the time of filing this report, Canadian authorities have not confirmed the existence of such a ruling. Neither the Nigerian government, the APC, nor the PDP has issued an official reaction to IPOB’s claims.

Since 2017, the Nigerian government has banned IPOB and branded it a terrorist organization, a designation the group rejects.
IPOB insists it is a peaceful advocacy body working toward the realization of self-rule for the people of the South-East.
