EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision was reached at the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday. The NEC also confirmed Umar Damagum as substantive National Chairman and upheld the current zoning arrangement for national offices ahead of the party’s elective convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Announcing the decision, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the zoning followed the recommendation of a committee chaired by Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri. According to him, positions currently held by northerners remain in the North, while those occupied by southerners stay in the South. By implication, the presidential ticket is zoned to the South since the chairmanship remains in the North.
The NEC also condemned what it described as the All Progressives Congress’ “state capture tactics” in recent bye-elections, alleging intimidation, inducement, and militarisation of the process in states like Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara. It accused the APC of attempting to establish a one-party state, describing it as a danger to democracy.
Although Makinde has not officially declared interest, sources within the party suggest the zoning decision strengthens his chances. His aide, Dare Adeleke, said the Oyo governor has “paid his dues” in the PDP and remains well-positioned to clinch the ticket.
The development also renews speculation about former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, who contested under the Labour Party in 2023. His supporters, including the Obidient Movement National Coordinator, Tanko Yunusa, said Obi would decide on his political future after the November governorship election.

Meanwhile, the APC has dismissed the PDP’s chances in 2027. Its Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said Tinubu would defeat any PDP candidate, insisting that zoning does not matter in the face of APC’s performance.
Despite internal debates, PDP leaders, including the Board of Trustees and Governors Forum, stressed unity, reconciliation, and sacrifice as key to regaining power in 2027.
