Tension is rising in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of its national elective convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. Over 3,000 delegates are expected to attend the exercise, which has further widened divisions between two rival factions.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the camp led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, backed by PDP governors, the Board of Trustees, and state chairmen, insists the convention will proceed as planned. However, the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insists the event is illegal.
Conflicting court orders have added to the uncertainty. While Justice James Omotosho restrained the party and INEC from conducting or monitoring the convention, Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court later granted an ex parte order permitting the convention to go ahead.
The Damagum-led National Working Committee recently suspended Anyanwu and other officials for alleged anti-party activities, while the Wike-backed faction retaliated by suspending Damagum and appointing Abdulrahman Mohammed as acting National Chairman.
Party insiders aligned with the Damagum group insist Justice Akintola’s ruling remains valid and that preparations for the convention are in top gear. They argue that Anyanwu’s suspension makes his actions null and void.
Meanwhile, Anyanwu has vowed that the convention will not hold, warning that it would amount to contempt of court. His ally, Timothy Osadolor, accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of fueling the crisis over a rumored 2027 presidential ambition.

Despite efforts at reconciliation, the PDP remains deeply divided, with fears the crisis could weaken its structure ahead of future elections.
