The University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected a proposed loan scheme from the Federal Government for university lecturers. The union described the offer as a “Greek gift” and stated that its members have no interest in accepting it.
During a special congress held on Tuesday, Eko Hot Blog reports that members of the union also publicly backed the actions and strategies of the union’s national leadership in their ongoing demands. The lecturers marched through the campus from the main gate to show their solidarity.

The Branch Chairman, Professor Idowu Kehinde, spoke to members and emphasized that if the government fulfills its promise of giving lecturers their deserved wages, no one would need to borrow money. He argued that the loans, which require the union to act as a guarantor, are unnecessary.
He pointed out that individual university governing councils can already provide loans to members based on existing conditions of service.
Professor Kehinde stated, “If we are paid a living wage and if all our allowances are paid as expected, who would want to go borrowing money? Let them do the needful, and we are okay.”
