President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate suspension of unprocessed shea nut exports as part of a policy shift to deepen Nigeria’s agro-industrial base and capture more value from the commodity.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who announced the directive on Tuesday, said the move is designed to promote local processing, enhance job creation, and increase foreign exchange earnings through the export of finished shea products.

Kyari noted that Nigeria, one of the world’s leading producers of shea, has historically lost significant revenue by exporting the nuts in raw form rather than processed.

He added that the new policy mirrors strategies adopted by neighbouring producers such as Ghana and Burkina Faso, which have restricted raw exports to stimulate domestic industries and strengthen their competitive position in the global shea market.
