Veteran Nigerian musician Bright Chimezie recently expressed his concerns about the lyrical quality of modern music during an episode of the CreativTea podcast.
Eko Hot Blog reports that while he acknowledges that today’s artists produce great rhythms and are financially successful, he believes their songs lack meaningful content.

Chimezie stated that his generation of musicians created songs with lyrics that have stood the test of time.
He cited his 1984 song, “Respect Africa,” as an example, saying he can still listen to it and feel proud of its message four decades later.

He challenged younger musicians to consider whether they will feel the same pride in their own work in 40 years.
Chimezie encouraged them to add rich, lasting lyrics to their music so they can create a body of work that their children will be proud of.
He believes incorporating strong lyrical content is crucial for the future of Nigerian music.
