- Operation thwarts planned escape into Zamfara
Nigerian troops have eliminated armed bandits and recovered stolen cattle during a swift military operation in Niger State.
According to Eko Hot Blog, the incident occurred in Magama Local Government Area after bandits attacked villages near Atabo and Zoma. The criminals had rustled a large number of cattle and were heading toward the border of Zamfara State when military forces launched a coordinated response involving both air and ground units.

Airstrikes were first to engage the fleeing bandits, successfully neutralising several and scattering the stolen herd. Ground troops quickly followed up, intercepting the remaining assailants and recovering the cattle before they could be taken out of the area.

Military sources confirmed that the bandits were taken by surprise during the air assault. The surviving members of the group attempted to regroup and continue their escape but were met with heavy fire from the land troops. The encounter led to more casualties among the attackers and brought the attempted escape to an end.
The recovered cattle have since been returned to the affected communities, and no civilian casualties were reported during the mission.
This operation highlights the growing coordination between the Nigerian military’s air and ground forces in tackling banditry, especially in the North Central region. With rural communities often at the mercy of armed groups, swift actions like this provide some level of reassurance and reduce the impact of cattle rustling on local livelihoods.
Officials praised the timely response of the troops, noting that the operation prevented what could have been a wider-scale attack and further displacement of residents. Security patrols have also been intensified in the area to prevent a resurgence of criminal activity.
The Nigerian military continues to carry out similar operations in other hotspots across the country as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace and secure farming communities vulnerable to bandit attacks.
