EKO HOT BLOG reports that the exemption, formally communicated in a letter dated January 8, 2026, covers all INEC National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, and directors nationwide. The letter, signed by CP Lateef Adio Ahmed, Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, followed an appeal submitted by INEC on December 11, 2025, citing the sensitive nature of its constitutional responsibilities and a history of attacks on electoral officials and facilities.
According to the correspondence, the IGP approved the exemption to ensure uninterrupted protection of INEC officials while maintaining public safety. INEC confirmed receipt of the approval in a statement issued on January 19, 2026, signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony. She explained that the measure would help safeguard officials during the preparation and conduct of elections, highlighting the Commission’s ongoing vulnerability to security threats.
President Tinubu’s earlier directive to withdraw VIP police personnel, issued in late 2025, aimed to curb misuse of security resources and strengthen policing at the grassroots. At the time, the IGP had clarified that 11,566 officers were redeployed from VIP protection to critical operational duties, including rural and township security, intelligence-led operations, and rapid response.

While the general withdrawal remains in effect for most government officials, INEC’s exemption reflects recognition of the unique security demands surrounding electoral administration. The police have assured that the process will be managed carefully to prevent misinformation or misuse, ensuring that the protection of INEC officials does not compromise broader public safety.
