EKO HOT BLOG reports that Obi was accompanied by the LP’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa. They were warmly received by key leaders of the faction, including Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Supo Shonibare, former Lagos State Deputy Governor Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, and General Secretary Chief Sola Ebiseni.
Other leaders in attendance included Prince Justice Faloye, National Publicity Secretary, Dele Farotimi, Organising Secretary, Bashorun Segun Sanni, Alade Rotimi-John, and Deputy Secretary-General.
In a statement jointly signed by Oba Olaitan and Prince Faloye, Obi thanked Afenifere for its support during his 2023 campaign and for “remaining a consistent voice for good governance.” He also briefed the group on current political developments and his vision as preparations ahead of the 2027 presidential election intensify.
According to the statement, discussions covered a wide range of issues including the harassment of political opposition, threats to democracy, Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, and the high cost of governance.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to restructuring, as well as to Afenifere’s long-standing principles on education, healthcare, rural development, and full employment. In response, Afenifere leaders reiterated their dedication to egalitarian values and praised Obi for aligning with their vision of inclusive governance.
The meeting also touched on concerns about the shrinking democratic space, with Afenifere leaders urging Nigerians to keep alive the democratic spirit nurtured by the nation’s founding fathers. The session ended around 4 p.m. with both parties promising further consultations and collaborations in the coming months.
