EKO HOT BLOG reports that Robinson, a trade school student, is accused of opening fire on Kirk in what prosecutors described as a politically motivated attack. Authorities said the suspect later surrendered to police after his family persuaded him to turn himself in.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed that his office has filed a notice of intent to pursue the death penalty in the case. Robinson will make his initial court appearance via video link, where the charges will be formally read and legal representation confirmed. A preliminary hearing is expected to follow, during which prosecutors must establish probable cause before the case advances to arraignment and trial.
Investigators disclosed that campus surveillance footage showed Robinson arriving armed and fleeing after shots were fired. According to court documents, messages sent to his partner revealed that he had been planning the attack for more than a week, describing Kirk as someone he believed promoted hatred. Police also recovered bullet casings at the scene that bore unusual engravings linked to online subcultures.
Robinson’s parents told investigators their son had become increasingly outspoken on political issues in recent months and frequently clashed with his father over his views. After the shooting, Robinson allegedly confessed to both his parents and his partner. He eventually surrendered with the help of a retired sheriff.
The charges include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent crime in the presence of a child. Prosecutors said the attack not only targeted Kirk’s political expression but also endangered children attending the event.
Robinson will remain in custody without bail as the case proceeds.
