EKO HOT BLOG reports that the latest update follows an earlier confirmation by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which had announced the loss of four of its staff members after the fire.
The fire outbreak, which occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, reportedly began around 1:30 p.m. in the inverter room located in the basement of the building.
Thick smoke quickly engulfed parts of the structure, sparking panic and forcing some occupants to attempt escaping through windows as emergency teams arrived.
Personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, and other emergency responders managed to pull out at least nine individuals.
Five were resuscitated at the scene, while four remained unconscious and were taken for further treatment.
In a statement released on Thursday, United Capital Plc expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their staff, confirming that six employees died as a result of the incident.
“With heavy hearts, the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc confirm the tragic passing of six of our colleagues following the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers,” the company said.
“These individuals were not just coworkers but part of our corporate family. Their absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We extend our sincere condolences to their loved ones and assure them of our continued support through this difficult time.
“We are planning a memorial to honour their lives and mourn their loss with the dignity they deserve. We also appreciate the courage and dedication shown by emergency responders during the incident.
“In these dark times, we stand together, united in grief, and pray for the souls of the departed.”
While an official total death count has not yet been issued by emergency agencies, internal sources and eyewitness accounts confirm that more lives may have been lost, as not all occupants made it out in time.
Efforts to get a response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are ongoing, but officials had yet to provide updates as of the time this report was filed.
